  • Successfully completed the Water Quality Monitoring Training Program for CBO representatives at Thihali, Kandakkuliya and Palliwasathurai water supply schemes, 9th February 2011 at Health Center Palliwasathurai

  • Bulk quantities of post consumer plastic polythene waste materials are giving to Holcim cement factory (at Puttalam) for co-processing

  • Second batch of common sanitation has been disbursed on 13th January 2011, at OHRD, Thillayadi, Puttalam

  • Third batch of individual sanitation has been disbursed on 8th January 2011

  • Tree planting at water intake sites and surrounding areas by PMU and WB representatives, 5th January 2011

  • Successfully completed the training on compost making with the support of Department of Agriculture, Makadura compost training Center (30th September 2010)

  • We are working towards achieving total sanitation at IDP Welfare Centers and at the surrounding areas
Environmental Safeguards at IHDP

At the project feasibility stage, the importance of environmental feasibility has been identified and detailed studies were completed. As per the World Bank classification the project is in category B.

Implementing Environmental Safeguards

During any kind of operations, we can profit significantly from efficient resources and efficient waste management, and from improved environmental management practices. We are promoting these concepts among IDPs who are benefiting from the project.

As per the site requirement the following important actions are implementing at the site level,

  • Regular education & awareness programs (related to environmental management, water & sanitation etc.)

  • Implementing total sanitation among non housing IDP recipients & common places at the surrounding area.

  • Collection of post consumer plastic/polythene materials at house hold level and giving to Holcim cement factory for co-processing.

  • Introducing house hold level composting

  • Capacity building and facilitating for water supply CBO representatives about "water quality monitoring"

  • Tree planting

  • Water source conservation

  • Analysis of existing drinking water sources at selected welfare centers

  • Other necessary safeguard actions for water supply and road development activities.
