The main component of the PHP is the construction of 5653 new houses to replace the temporary thatched huts and completion of 2232 partly completed houses distributed among 87 welfare camps in four divisions of Puttalam district over a period of Three years. Further it is intended to finance the construction of 560 new houses for non-IDPs. Work had commenced on 4762 IDP houses. These included 4460 new houses to replace the earlier temporary thatched huts and upgrading of 302 partly built houses.
1510 houses (71% of target in phase 1) were substantially completed with internal plastering, windows, Door and Toilet. 297 of the partly built houses (99%) were successfully upgraded.97% of recipients are living in habitable new houses in Phase 1.
In Phase 2, 97% of the recipients have completed the foundation and 57% were able to complete the superstructure. Further 14% of the beneficiaries completed their houses up to roof level within four months of time duration.
In addition to construction of houses for IDP′s as well as Host communities the aim of IHDP-Puttalam is to implement basic infrastructures projects for drinking water supply and internal road development. 100 Nos of IDP camps which are being covered by Housing grant of our project funded by the World Bank are supposed to be facilitated by those projects before June, 2011.
Under Water Supply component, it has been clustered in to 12 Water Supply projects covering all the above IDP camps in 4 Divisions in Puttalam district. NWSDB (National Water Supply and Drainage Board) is the party doing Investigation, Designing, Preparation of Bidding Documents and consultation with the construction supervision.Out of 12, 3 WSS have been awarded and construction is in progress. Others are in stages of investigation, designing and tendering.
Under road improvement it has been clustered in to 11 road improvement projects covering all IDP camps in 4 Divisions in Puttalam district. NWPRDD(North West Provincial Road Development Department) is the party doing surveying, Designing, Preparation of BD′s and supervision.
